WELCOME
In recent years, the COVID-19 global pandemic brought significant global challenges; consequently, healthcare organisations around the world needed to quickly adapt to the new normal. Four years later, we are now in the post-COVID era and attention has returned to how healthcare systems can provide a more efficient, safer service to patients. As patient backlogs persist, streamlining systems, enhancing quality and seeking out other efficiencies has become increasingly crucial for healthcare industries worldwide.
One solution that could help provide more efficient healthcare is artificial intelligence (AI). AI engenders excitement and hope, as well as trepidation and uncertainty in equal measure. One particular challenge will be legal liability, especially as AI becomes more integrated into healthcare. This topic is the focus of our first article. The second article comments on another rapidly growing sector — the aesthetics and beauty industry. We explore how the UK government is looking to improve patient safety outcomes through stricter regulation, and what the potential impacts may be on both consumers and businesses in this sector.
We also bring you news of Odyssey Group’s charitable endeavours, as well as a reminder of how our Medical Malpractice product and the team here at Newline can help your business.

I recall emerging from an Odeon cinema onto the Holloway Road in 2001, having just watched a movie about a childlike android called David who had been programmed to experience love. The film? Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence. My review? That will never catch on.
Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare Sector
Fast forward to 2024. Artificial Intelligence (AI) – the use of digital technology to create systems capable of performing tasks commonly thought to require human intelligence – is absolutely everywhere.

As the aesthetics industry has snowballed, contributing £24.5 billion to GDP in 2022, so have the calls for stricter regulation on the practitioners and premises undertaking cosmetic procedures. This pressure resulted in Section 180 of the Health and Care Act 2022, which gives the Secretary of State powers, subject to required consultation, to prohibit practitioners and premises from carrying out specified cosmetic procedures in England unless they have an appropriate licence.

The Government's Consultation was first undertaken in Autumn 2023 and the results are presently in the course of being reviewed, alongside liaison with expert groups. We are unlikely to see finalised regulation until mid-2026.
